Overview

Canada Student Visa well known as Canadian Student Visa, Canada Study Visa or Canada Study Permit is for students who have a confirmed college admission letter from a Canadian Education Institution or a Canadian university. The students should be willing genuinely with a Canada student visa.

Eligibility for the Canada Student Visa/Canada Study Visa/Canada Study Permit

Eligibility for Canada Student Visa depends on the level and the study program. Educational background along with country of citizenship also plays an important role in getting Canada Study Permit or Canadian Student Visa

You need to qualify the below points to apply for a Canada student visa or a Canada study permit:

• Canada student visa applicant should have their application accepted by a recognized school or university in Canada.
• Canada student visa applicant should demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to meet accommodation, study requirements and other living expenses.
• Canada student visa applicant needs to be a law abiding citizen and should produce a police certificate on arrival.
• Canada student visa applicant should have the intention to leave Canada on completion of the course.
• Canada student visa applicant should undergo medical/health examination if required.

Canada student visa applicant is not subjected to all the above requirements for Canada Study Permit or Canada Student Visa if:

• If the study program or course duration is less than or equal to 6 months
• If Canada student visa applicant is a family member or staff member of a foreign representative or diplomat to Canada accredited by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada
• If the Canada student visa applicant is a member of a foreign armed force under the Visiting Forces Act

A Canadian student visa holder is eligible for:

• Canada Student Visa, Canada Study Permit or Canada Study Visa also allows an overseas student to work part time on the educational institute’s campus in which he/she is studying, throughout the school year.
• Canada student visa holders can apply for Off-Campus Work visa after 6 months of educational program

• This visa also allows foreign students to stay in Canada for up to 2 years, as they can apply for the Post-Graduation Work visa

Minor Students 

Minor applicants who want to come to Canada for pursuing their studies need to have a custodian. A letter of permission from parents along with their contact details also needs to be provided.

Visa Validity

• Grades 1 through 8 minors have validity for 1 year duration
• Grades 9 through 12 minors or minors attending college or university have visa validity for full length of their study and additional 90 days.
• Minor students studying in Quebec have the validity period same as that of their CAQ (Québec Acceptance Certificate)
• Minors who are children of people holding long-term study or work permits, minor student visa is valid for till the child’s passport is valid or same period as of their parents or as the length of their CAQ (Québec Acceptance Certificate) if studying in Quebec

Visa exemption for minor children

• If the child is in kindergarten
• If he/she is a refugee or child of a refugee or is a child of parents who are already in Canada and are allowed to study or work

If the minors wish to pursue their higher education in Canada after turning into a major, they need to apply for a study permit.

Extension of the Student Visa

Applicants with intention to extend their stay in Canada as a student need to apply for visa renewal, 30 days before the current visa expires. The student can stay in Canada, if the current visa expires before the decision is done on the visa.

Canada student visa applicants need to apply for renewal of their study permit, if they intend to travel out of Canada and the permit expires whilst traveling. Canada study permit or Canada Student Visa cannot be extended beyond the expiry date on the Canadian student visa applicant’s passport.
