Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (I.R.C.C) has received significant strides towards developing its clients' service experience. A decrease in processing times and backlogs is a cornerstone of that work.
Today the Honourable Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen, highlighted some of the important improvements that I.R.C.C has performed over the prior year.
I.R.C.C has been capable of reducing backlogs significantly and address family reunification a preference, thanks to an important multi-year plan immigration levels. For instance, the Program of Live-In Caregiver inventory was cut from a high of 62,000 in May 2014, to smaller than 12,000 by April 2018. We are on record to reach our 2017 promise to process minimum 80% of the continuing L.C.P backlog by the close of 2018 and are processing new L.C.P applications of permanent residence within 12 months.
I.R.C.C also freshly began using an enhanced method to evaluate processing requirements for some current applications of permanent residence.
Also, we overcame the inventory of spousal sponsorship from a high of 75,000 to 15,000 as of December 31, 2017, and are processing latest spousal sponsorship requests within 12 months. To support spouses further, we stretched the Open Work Permit Pilot for spousal sponsorship candidates and simplified the checklists and guides.
We also executed changes to the Act of Citizenship that give added flexibility to citizenship candidates to satisfy the conditions for Canadian citizenship and promote more immigrants to take the citizenship path.
This year we also encouraged students and workers. In June we observed the flourishing first year of the Global Skills Strategy, which has helped the economy of Canada and served 10,000 highly skilled workers and higher than 100 companies. The government of Canada is also started the Student Direct Stream which will assist students from India, China, the Philippines and Vietnam make their study permits quicker.
As we examine these changes, we continue to listen to our clients actively and are addressing these moves with their comments and concerns in mind.
